Due to its many qualities, the Staffordshire bull terrier (also called staffie or staffy) has attracted a wide audience. Wonderful companion, he shows great affection to his teachers, including children and he is also an excellent guardian. It is compared and sometimes confused with his cousin the American Staffordshire terrier (or Amstaff ) which is larger and especially categorized 2 (watchdogs and defense). A license to keep dogs that are said to be dangerous is mandatory for Amstaff, which is not the case for the Staffie.

His history

Created in the nineteenth century by crossing the Bulldog and various Terriers, then fell into oblivion for many years, the Staffordshire Bull-Terrier became fashionable in the United States during the interwar period. He then found a great reputation in Britain. An excellent hunter of rats because of its burrowing origins, rat hunts were organized by the “black country” miners in central England: they bet on the dog that would catch the most rats in a given time; This allowed them to round the end of the month. Today, he knows a great success in continental Europe. In France, in 2017, he came in 4th place in the LOF all breeds registrations, dethroning the Golden Retriever and Labrador.

His character

He has become a pet dog appreciated for his docility and patience with children, combative but balanced, of foolproof courage, he is able to sacrifice his life for his masters. His physic

It is, muscular and compact. He is at once strong and agile, has a broad skull head, a well-defined stop, dark, rounded eyes, and a strong lower jaw. The ears are pink or half-straight. The thick neck forms a light bow. The anterior ones wide apart and the broad and deep chest emphasize the force of the animal. His hair is smooth, short and thick. The accepted colors are red, fawn, white, black or each of these colors with white. Some brindle spots are also admitted as is brindle with white. The blue Staffie is only tolerated and yet highly sought after. The forbidden colors are black & liver and black & fire.

The maintenance of this “Nanny Dog” is very easy, a simple weekly brushing is enough to maintain the beauty of his coat. His molting is only very moderate

His health

The Staffie is greedy, so food is a point of vigilance: we must ensure a balanced diet and regular physical and sufficient expenditure. Its fine hair makes it particularly sensitive to cold, it is not a dog that can sleep outside when temperatures are low. Its life expectancy is 13 years on average.
